The lamp is used in the real world where John is trying to fall asleep, while the walkie talkie is used in the dream world, after the completion of the falling asleep phase. The lamp lowers John's stress faster compared to keeping his eyes open. The lamp used is the same in nights 1 and 2, until it got replaced by a new lamp donated from the Revivel Company.
